Her or Me
Episode 22
Season 1, 1984

Renee and Stacy are sisters (on the show, people!!!!) If you watched The Beginning, you got to hear that, otherwise, it’s not until Go for the Gold that you find this out. This is important, because a lot of the plots and subplots often revolve around their relationship.

Renee has had it with her little sister. Seems everything is Stacy, Stacy, Stacy – help Stacy with this, remind Stacy about that. Stacy, however, is just as displeased with her big sister. Renee doesn’t let Stacy borrow her things or cover for her when she gets in trouble at home. It escalates into a fight, and Mickey has to pull the two apart so they can rehearse.

When they’re not singing, they’re screaming at each other. It finally gets to the point that Riley has to come and warn them about the noise. He also brings good news: the junior high prom committee is considering Kids Inc for their prom. Everyone temporarily forgets their troubles as they dream about how famous this could make them.

Unfortunately, it does not last long. By the end of the next song, the girls have come to the breaking point. They tell their befuddled friends that they refuse to be in the band together, and the band has to choose which girl stays and which girl goes.

No matter what anyone says to them, Renee and Stacy refuse to reconsider. They don’t seem to care that the band may break up because of it. Renee storms off and the others leave her and Stacy to cool off separately – which means a split-screen duet.

While Renee waits, Gloria drags Stacy to her and tells them that the band demands reconciliation. She lays it on really heavy, telling them that infighting leads to wars and total destruction. Apparently, it makes for blurry viewing as well…

We’re not sure yet if this has worked. The others are anxiously awaiting the two sisters because the prom committee has arrived, wondering what the holdup is. Renee and Stacy walk in and hey, it looks as if they’ve made up!

Uh oh, hold that thought – they immediately begin arguing at the counter. No, wait – they were kidding! Somehow they have mysteriously worked out all their problems, realized what they were doing to the band and mended their relationship. Everyone puts on a great show for the committee, and…awwwww!

I love this episode! 4.5 mics because if I gave it 5, you'd roll your eyes at me. Also, I think it's a bit early for us to be upset that Renee and Stacy are fighting to the point of destruction - we haven't known them that long yet. After seeing The Beginning, I can understand it a bit more, but if you're not going to acknowledge The Beginning any other way, why start now?

Both girls are great in this episode. "Living in Desperate Times", despite that ear-piercing beginning, is a great Gloria song.

- Do the girls share a room? Stacy can hear Renee snoring (supposedly), yet when Renee has to pack for Greeblax, there's only one bed.
- Gloria has a sister! No info on whether she's older or younger, but they apparently argue a lot.
- A LOT of dialogue before the first song. It’s been a while since we had a dialogue-first episode
- This episode is one of the ones featured in the WO segment of VH1’s Before They Were Rock Stars
