Historical P*lace
Episode 20
Season 1, 1984

Introducing: --

Kids Inc. is excited to see Riley pouring over The P*lace’s blueprints. They assume the owner is planning some big construction and enjoy fantasizing about what he’ll build. They are in for quite a shock. After the second number, Riley comes on stage and announces that The P*lace is condemned and will be torn down ASAP.

Everyone spends the rest of the afternoon tearfully packing.

They lament the fact that Riley is out of a job and there won’t be any place for kids to hang out. They can’t raise enough money to buy The P*lace by selling their possessions. Even a benefit concert won’t do. Their spirits are sufficiently crushed, and Renee takes her solo as she cleans out the dining area.

Outside, talk turns to The Palace and its grandeur long ago. Riley and Mickey tell of how, in its heyday, The Palace was the place to go for big-name musical acts.

They mourn the passing of “the good old days”. What better way to mark time gone by than with a decade-by-decade musical montage?

Suddenly, Gloria is inspired. She and the others run off to court to protest the demolition. But they return in somber moods, and Riley is confused until he watches their reenactment.

They approach the bench. The judge is unwavering. They tell him their story and give him multiple instances of famous patrons of The P*lace (real and hilariously inversed). The judge is moved.

He declares The P*lace a historical landmark, canceling the demo. The P*lace is saved! Let’s celebrate with a great number about unrequited love of an introverted eccentric boy, with the fantastic ending, “If he doesn’t love me, I think I’ll probably diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie!”

WTF?

I gave this episode 3.5 mics because it is a good episode, but it's a bit too early to be reminiscing, isn't it? We just started the show. It would have made a much better season finale. This is where we first learn about The Palace, and all the prestige it had. Have to admit, it sounded like a really cool place.

- How would Riley know the history of The P*lace? He hasn't been there that long!
- Mickey has gone to The Palace, with his dad!
- In the first number, Kid’s hat falls off, and someone in the audience puts it on. Someone else (Andrea, it looks like), takes it off him and tosses it back to Kid.
- During "The Belle of St. Mark", Gloria swipes a hat from the audience and wears it for a while for some reason before giving it back. The boy appears to be a Scout from the previous episode.

Songs:
Goody Two-Shoes –   (the edit made very little sense, and overall, the song was just too hyper)
You Make My Dreams Come True –   (not that many tweaks, but same ADHD as the first)
We Belong –
Good Old Days –
Belle of St. Mark –   (Martika is great, as usual, but what’s with this song? It has nothing to do with the episode, and it’s depressing! Shouldn’t they be happy that they keep The P*lace?)
