Campout Blues
Episode 19
Season 1, 1984

Introducing: --

The local Boy Scout** chapter is having a big campout, and Kid is signed up to go. The only trouble is, he’s never camped before, and has no clue what it’s like.

He’s a bit unsettled at the idea of sleeping outside on the ground exposed to various animals (and going in the woods). By the second number, he decides he’s not going.

The others attempt to get Kid to face his fears, but he’s not listening. Stacy decides to take a different approach.

After one TV special, she’s a trained hypnotist, and so she’s going to remove The Kid’s fears with a Boy George pendant mystical crystal and put him into a trance. She sends him to a creepy musical number instead.

When he surfaces, Mickey is there with an old camping enthusiast magazine that he says is chock full of
celebrity campers. Kid is pleasantly surprised to find that even his idol, Michael Jackson, has been on a camping trip. He imagines what it would be like if he had the courage to camp out.

By the end of the day, Kid has made up his mind and is ready to go. As a present, the rest of the kids chipped in and rented him a portable Singing Machine to take with him.

They can’t resist playing with it.

I hope the bears like 80’s music.

I never did like the idea of camping, anyway. All those bugs, and sleeping in a tent, and bugs, and no bathrooms, and bugs, and giving up electricity for a day...oh, did I mention bugs?
Still, this is a cute 3 microphone episode. What’s funny is that every single organization in town always uses The P*lace to announce its goings-on, even if they have nothing to do with music.

**They don’t actually say “Boy Scouts”, but since Kid is the only one dressed up, and no one else admits to being a scout but Mickey, I would assume that’s what they’re talking about. Also, all his examples are men - although he does say "all the Jacksons".
